I think it's a great idea and look forward to see industry major players stub on this. Standardization in digital production is something that not only those involved in can benefit from but clients and prospects too. It's a win-win situation for both parties!

This is going to be a great forum for the digital creative and production process. A lot of it has been home-brewed or adapted from other processes, and it's key to have this type of collaboration to move the industry forward.
The value is going to come from what everyone puts into it though. I really am curious to see how much people do end up contributing.
its a good idea, thanks
I am also curious to see who contributes and how. I think often the biggest hurdle for digital / modern production is that each project is very different and the approach to solving the "problem" doesn't always fit into a contained process. I hope that people post more about the approach to problem solving instead of trying to develop a singular production process that is supposed to work for any/all projects.
Looking forward to learning from everyone here and contributing where I can.
I agree Dannis. Currently we have two types of project:
Firstly large consumer facing HTML based sites which need to operate for 3+ years and hold lots of content.
And secondly branded entertainment sites, mostly flash based, which only have a life span of 3 months.
The same production solution is not for both but what Stndrd is proposing comes close.
Also on a side note, Stndrd you need to promote this initiative more, it's a great idea but after a flurry of initial attention is starting to fade a little (harldy any posts here).
Good luck and thank you
I think this kind of discussion is long overdue -- some agencies I've worked with (who shall remain nameless ;) ) guard their production process as some kind of national security issue, which I think is ridiculous -- the more we can share best practice, the more we can solve the problems we ALL face and the more educated our clients will be in how processes have moved on since the time of Don Draper and tv-centric campaigns.
Agreed we need to promote this more, maybe even have a bunch of us meet in person, because I hadn't heard of this before moving to North Kingdom and I was having beers with B-Reel on a regular basis before then!
Will start thinking about this and try and share with any other producers I come across.

p.s. I would like to state for the record that I have nothing at all against Don Draper. I do think that some agencies still work like Sterling Cooper though.
Well now this is really exciting. Frankly, I'm seeing the most articulate description of how to navigate ever increasingly complicated projects, sadly I'm often reduced to using a ton of expletives when describing what I think would help us execute the coolest stuff... Flexibility (or agility!), maintaining a unified focus from all collaborators from the outset and avoiding dogmatic "this is how it's usually done..." thinking - should ensure end results that deliver kick ass media, surpassing any traditional, passive media user experience, be it online, offline, installation or whatever. I'm so stoked to access this resource and hopefully contribute something meaningful to the group soon.
david_sheridan This is great news. Big thanks to all those who made this happen - lets hope some momentum builds up.... maybe a networking event ? LinkedIn group?
50% of the digital production work that we do for agencies is at the often derided 'commodity' end of the outsourcing spectrum doing high volume banner design, re-sizing, translations and transcreations as well as volume HTML and content management. It may not be the most glamorous work but agencies and clients still deserve the security of knowing they are contracting with a professional operation and we, in turn, need to have certain protection over the work we deliver. I see that stndrd.org is open-source and that's fine and right at this stage. I hope that some future iteration (or a resulting trade association) requiring a commitment to agreed industry standards will soon follow. Thanks again to stndrd.org's founders and to NMA (March 11) for getting this started. David
Agree with other commenters that we need to get some momentum behind the site. We're all so busy on tasks all day that it's had to step back and look at process from a broader perspective.
I'd like to see more detailed checklists for QA, for example. As a small business I wear a lot of hats (doesn't everyone) so it's often difficult to shut down distractions and focus on the quality of our work when it's time to ship to client. I've started to build a simple checklist so I remember to look at the SOW, the PSD, in multiple broswers, etc, but it would be great to get input from others!
Great idea - standardising the bits which can be standardised allows us to spend more time on the creative and varying elements. I'd hope that clients are involved in the process too.
Jennifer_Seavey> It'd be great if you could share more with the group about what the challenges we're trying to solve are, what the proposed solutions are, get all the tasklists and ideas out into the open, so we can see what input is needed. I'd love to get involved, but beyond reading some of the existing proposed documents, its hard to see what thinking has already taken place, etc. We can then share the load, and people can start making suggestions via the wiki and we can all start co-authoring. Really excited about being able to create a set of shared and standardised process and documentation.
Stndrd_ is an open source approach for establishing standards and practices in digital production.
