STNDRD Presents a special off-site exhibition at ACRE Residency: Aquí a pop up exhibition of new work by Sarita Garcia.
Sarita Garcia’s work is Informed by architectural spaces, and references objects and materiality through the use of textiles, prints and repeated patterns. Archiving vernacular culture from South Texas such as signage, foods, markets and fruit stands, these recordings become fragments of such cultural hubs and abstracted to create ‘fantasyscapes’ that remix the reality of these spaces. With bright colors and screen prints of specific foods, she talks about consumerism, identity and stereotypes that are often held by outsiders and insiders. Through screen printing large textiles, Sarita showcases a vocabulary of her own culture and iconography as a means to empower these spaces.
